Efforts dedicated to making a favorite bar food a little healthier are never in vain. These baked bad boys are DELICIOUS as they are easy.
PS- like my new marble counters?! Just kidding! The man at my tile place down the block now lets me borrow the beautiful sample slabs for my photography! It's like having a library of countertops! How nice is that??
12 skim mozzarella cheese sticks, cut in half
1/2 cup flour
1 egg, slightly beaten
1 cup plain Italian bread crumbs
2 teaspoons garlic powder
2 teaspoons onion powder
1 teaspoon chili powder
2 teaspoons salt Optional: ranch dressing (Greek yogurt and Hidden Valley seasoning) and/or marinara sauce
Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and coat with thin layer of vegetable oil.
Freeze mozzarella sticks until hard (approx. a half hour).
Place flour in one bowl and egg in a second bowl. In a third bowl, add bread crumbs, onion powder, garlic powder, chili powder, and salt and whisk to combine.
First, coat cheese sticks in the flour, then in the egg mixture, and finally in the crumb blend. Dip each coated cheese stick into the egg mixture one more time, and then back in the crumb mixture one more time.
Freeze sticks for an additional 15 minutes. (This will keep the cheese from melting too fast while the coating gets crispy in the oven!).
Place cheese sticks in a row on prepared baking sheet.
Bake 6-8 minutes, then turn and cook another 5-8 minutes on other side until golden and crispy.
